VOLUNTEERS FOR EURAISIAN WATER MILFOIL I recently talked to Tim Hoyman of Onterra.  He wants to set up a meeting / training session for our lake.  This all pertains to our grant, and this is a way for us to MAKE MONEY!  We will learn to identify and log Euraisian water milfoil beds.  You have all expressed interest in helping.  Tim feels it will take about a 3 hour session some talking, some time on the North Twin Lodge ball field, and some time on the water. HERE IS THE PLAN??. WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 6TH —-  9AM  MEET AT MY HOUSE.    INTRODUCTIONS AND BRIEF MEETING             10AM — PROCEED TO THE NORTH TWIN LODGE SOFTBALL FIELD 10:45 — PROCEED TO MY PIER TO BOARD BOATS.  SEARCH FOR MILFOIL.             NOON — DONE

2008 VILAS CO. EWM CHEMICAL CONTROL STATISTICS

Filed under: Lake Treatment — admin @ 1:41 pm

2008 was a benchmark year for EWM management in Vilas County.  For the first time ever, 17 area water bodies were subjected to aggressive chemical control programs, all with WDNR approved plant management plans and with State funding covering as much as 75% of the costs for:

·         Pre and post treatment assessment of the aquatic plant communities (performed by professional consultants)

·         Pre-treatment mapping

·         Permitting fees

·         Placement of the chemicals by a licensed applicator

Conditions at the time of all chemical applications were ideal; water temperatures on treated lakes was at or below 62 degrees Fahrenheit and winds were light to calm. The chemical applicator used high tech electronic distribution equipment enabling precise control of both placement and concentration of the chemicals.

Evaluation of the effectiveness of the treatments will occur on all lakes during the balance of this summer.  The results for each lake will be considered when planning ongoing management for 2009.

The results of the current post treatment measurement of chemical residue in the water and sediment at specific sites on the Eagle River chain will also be considered for future county-wide planning.  The results of that study will not be known until later this year.

The following statistics reflect the county-wide 2008 chemical control program.:

Total water bodies chemically treated:  17 (11 Eagle River Chain, 6 non-chain lakes)
Total acres chemically treated:  452 (195 Eagle River Chain, 257 non-chain lakes)
Total gallons liquid 2,4-D applied: 1,025 (0 Eagle River Chain, 1,025 Big Sand Lake)
Total pounds granular 2,4-D (Navigate brand) applied:  47,520 (25,550 Eagle River Chain, 21,970 non-chain lakes)
NOTE:  Navigate brand 2,4-D is 73.3% by weight inactive ingredient and 26.7% 2,4-D.  Therefore, of the 47,520 pounds of Navigate applied county-wide, only 12,688 pounds was active ingredient.

Additional information and links to maps showing specific treatment sites for each lake can be found on the EWM page of the AIS Partnership website at:  http://vilaslandandwater.org/ais_pages/ais_species_ewm_page.htm#2008chemicalcontrol
